The first solo release by a Beatle (if you discount John and Yoko’s ‘Two Virgins’), ‘Wonderwall Music’ is a soundtrack to a psychedelic film starring Jane Birkin. It’s a great document of a short-lived era of the fag-end of the summer of love, a dark and hallucinatory tale of two lives and two worlds separated by a wall, until a calamitous event brings them together. The album is a fabulous collection of George Harrison compositions, recorded in Bombay and London. One song recorded in Bombay, ‘The Inner Light’, wasn’t used on the soundtrack but became the B-side of The Beatles’ single ‘Lady Madonna’.
