When ‘Magic Fly’ became a huge hit in 1977, the mysterious Space were never seen. Men in shonky space suits mimed to the track, like extras from a cash-in sci-fi movie. It was an anonymous slice of weird electronic pop. Behind the fluid melodious groove was French synth head Didier Marouani. He composed ‘Magic Fly’ for a 1976 TV programme about astrology, and the Space concept flowed from that. The 1970s albums remain a fascinating example of what we might call pre-electronica, and the best of them are gathered on this essential compilation.
